The business closest to the Olympic Park has urged politicians and bureaucrats to protect the area's artists.

Two years ago Lance Forman of Formans' smoked salmon factory on Fish Island gave up 600sq m of space at his venue for contemporary art, giving local painters and photographers the chance to show off their products.

Films on Fridges opens tomorrow night (July 27) and organisers have given a new purpose to the 'urban sculpture' which was recreated down the road at Fish Island.

Plans are in place to build a "creative hub" next to the Olympic site in Newham following a £5million land purchase by a regeneration group.

London Thames Gateway Development Corporation has bought the 1.64 acres area on Fish Island to turn it into a mixed use sustainable community to both live and work in.

Its bones are roof trusses, its guts are a factory which bubbles into life around 4am, and its pink hue was touched up by builders just before its opening in October last year.
