Firefighters using ropes and a cherry picker came to the rescue of a pair of Canary Wharf window cleaners stuck on the side of an office building on Friday.

The two men were suspended in their cradle, jammed on a ledge at the fifth floor of 25 North Colonnade, which is occupied by the FSA, above the Crossrail site.

Gordon Brown used a recent visit to Tower Hamlets to condemn Tory plans to abolish the Financial Services Authority.

The North Collonade-based regulator employs about 2,800 staff, mostly in Canary Wharf, but shadow chancellor George Osborne plans to return its powers to the Bank of England if the Conservative Party wins the general election.

The Wharf-based financial watchdog announced today that Mr Sants will step down after three years in the job, a period which has seen increasing criticism of the FSA's regulatory role, particularly when the credit crunch hit the banking sector in 2008.

Test results on a sick worker at the Financial Services Authority have come back negative for swine flu.

The North Colonnade-based company sent a male member of staff home last week after he returned from the United States with flu-like symptoms.

Sir James Crosby, the deputy chief executive of the FSA made the announcement in an emailed statement on Wednesday.

Homeowners are being advised on ways to protect their investments after a massive rise in repossessions.

Figures from the Financial Services Authority show a 71 per cent hike in the number of repossessions in over the last 12 months.

CREDIT Suisse has been slapped with a record fine after Canary Wharf traders deliberately mis-priced asset-backed securities they were holding.

The Cabot Square bank has been ordered to pay £5.6million by the Financial Services Authority for flaws in its systems and controls which led to a revenue write-down of around $2.65billion (£1.41billion) just a week after it released its financial results for 2007 early this year.

Our new London Mayor recently addressed Docklands businesses encouraging them to support the community.

As I have often written, the gulf between the Wharf and many local people needs to be narrowed.

There are many areas of progress such as the newly opened Financial Services Academy.

But there is much more to do.

The National Skills Academy for Financial Services officially opens at its new facility in the George Green Building in East India Dock Road today (Thursday, February 21).

The Academy, supported by Canary Wharf firms including Citigroup and HSBC, provides training across a range of financial disciplines for budding Wharf workers from Tower Hamlets. It will be opened by Hector Sants, chief executive of the Financial Services Authority.

Courses have been run at Tower Hamlets College in Poplar for the last 18 months but with £1million
of investment from London Thames Gateway Development Corporation students now have a purpose-designed building in which to work.
