THE FORMER care worker convicted of the murder of a frail pensioner told psychiatrists he had "felt the presence of the devil since he was a boy".

Unemployed West India Dock Road man Edward Ross was handed a life sentence at the Old Bailey today after his conviction for the murder of 83-year-old Helen Mercer in her own bed 14 years ago.

He will spend at least 15 years behind bars.

A FORMER care worker has been found guilty of the murder of an 83-year-old woman 14 years ago.

An Old Bailey jury unanimously declared unemployed Edward Ross, who turned 40 today, as the man who savagely beat pensioner Helen Mercer in her own bedroom in Leyton back in 1994. He was arrested last year after a "cold case" investigation linked his palm-print to bloody marks left over her bed.

Judge Gerald Gordon is scheduled to sentence Ross this afternoon. For more information on the two-week case, see here and here.

THE BRUTAL murder of a frail 83-year-old woman has finally been brought to trial.

It was 14 years ago that elderly Helen Mercer was beaten at her home and left for dead by an unknown attacker.

But West India Dock Road man Edward Ross appeared at the Old Bailey charged with her murder this week, after improved DNA and fingerprint technology led to his arrest.
