Labour and Conservative councillors in Tower Hamlets finally discovered the potency of coalitions of convenience when their joint manoeuvring shot down elements of the budget of independent mayor Lutfur Rahman.

Although the savings of less than £2million are a drop in the ocean for a council that handles a budget of more than a billion, the triumphs were at the high profile end of the spectrum.

Labour candidate for City and East John Biggs has held his seat in the London Assembly with an increased majority of 28 per cent.

Biggs received 107,000 of the 170,000 votes with Conservative candidate John Moss coming second with just under 25,000 votes.

Despite enjoying strong support in the east of London, Labour candidate for the race to be mayor, Ken Livingstone remains behind favourite Boris Johnson.

The current mayor has the edge over his rival with Green's Jenny Jones, Lib Dem's Brian Paddick and independent candidate Siobhan Benita battling it out for third.
