Educating Londoners is key to growth

While the majority of the aviation world is going through a recession-induced rough patch, one airline has bucked the trend with a sharp increase in passenger numbers.

Cityjet reported a passenger rise of 23 per cent on from London City to Scotland year on year and a 10 per cent increase on routes to Antwerp and Luxembourg in December.

City Airport's biggest airline is in the midst of a huge advertising campaign targeting business and premium passengers.

Air France/KLM-owned Cityjet, which recently merged with VLM Airlines to give it over half the landing slots at the Royal Docks airport, is splashing out £4million on digital outdoor, transport and print media.

VLM Airlines at London City Airport is no more. A new airline has been formed which its owners say will be a stronger force at the Royal Docks airport.

The Belgian carrier VLM was taken over by Air France-KLM earlier this year with the aim of possibly amalgamating it with the company's own airline Cityjet, also based at London City.

This year promises to be a challenging one for the aviation industry – battling a global financial meltdown and reduced passenger numbers.

However, London City Airport’s passenger figures are up and with a flight increase agreed by Newham Council there is scope for expansion.

Tunnel chaos brings flights to City

AIR France has increased flights from London City Airport to Paris following the fire in the Channel Tunnel.

Two extra flights will be taking off from the Docklands airport to the French capital this weekend.

The first will leave on Saturday at 9:40am and the other will take off from London at 4:55pm on Sunday.

The tunnel has been closed since a freight train caught fire on September 11.

Air France has had a boom in bookings following the incident and has sold out of flights between Heathrow and Paris.
