The DLR has been in a state of constant expansion since its inception in 1982 when the emerging Docklands developments demanded a dedicated transport link.

British Transport Police were called at 2.47pm after two passengers claimed they were threatened by a man with a firearm between West Ham and Canning Town stations.

Attack triggers calls to close nightclub

An attack outside a nightclub has led to calls for action to be taken against the Newham venue.

The incident, in which a man was believed to be cut in the head with a broken bottle, took place on Friday night (September 11) outside the Summer Gold club.

Vandalism brought DLR services to a halt at rush-hour on Monday evening.

A fence panel was thrown on to the track near Canning Town station at about 6pm, causing the power to be turned off and leaving some commuters trapped for nearly two hours.

Commuters faced major problems getting to Canary Wharf and beyond this morning. A signalling problem at Canning Town halted all services from Beckton and Woolwich Arsenal. A rail replacement bus service took some of the strain and the service started to get back to normal mid-morning with DLR reporting minor delays.

The protests at Excel certainly don't match the drama of yesterday's clashes in the City, but police are taking no chances.

IT has been called the child of the Victoria Docks by Dickens, but it seems Canning Town is finally about to grow up, writes Raksha Malde-Kara.

New jobs and houses are to be created in the area as part of a £3billion regeneration scheme according to the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC).

Work has already begun to demolish tower blocks on Fife Road and the first signs of the transformation are beginning to emerge as gleaming new structures, such as community centre The Place, start to appear.

A NEW developer for the £2.7billion Canning Town and Custom House regeneration project could be in place by the end of the year.

The government's Thames Gateway team are interviewing five consortiums clamouring for the vacant spaces on the East London building project, which could bring 11,000 new homes to the deprived area.

The ambitious three-phase project is scheduled to begin this year, with a 2022 completion date. The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation claims the scheme is still on track, despite the withdrawal of developers Lend Lease and housebuilder Taylor Wimpey in January.
