Never mind the figures or the shaky prediction of what it will be like in five years' time, people want to know what is going to be done now to help them get on in life.

Wharf-based Barclays has come criticism after choosing budget day to reveal its bosses would be sharing £40.3million of bonuses.

When I recently received the information that in just six months the mayor and some of his supporters had managed to spend over £7,000 in taxi fares, I was shocked but not surprised.

Moves to agree a budget for Tower Hamlets ground to a halt last night amid scenes of confusion and acrimony.

With the parties in deadlock, another meeting will be held next week to thrash out details. Failure could mean that central government intervenes and takes over the process.
