Charlton manaager Chris Powell made no excuses for failing to turn on the style at The Valley on Monday as the Addicks beat Brentford to go five points clear at the top of League One.

Following a tough defeat against Leyton Orient just 48 hours earlier Powell said bouncing back with a win was essential.

A penalty nightmare saw Charlton crash out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Brentford on Tuesday night.

The Addicks had held League One's form team to a well-earned draw in normal time but misses by Johnnie Jackson, Therry Racon and Kyel Reid from 12 yards out saw Charlton fall to defeat.

The Addicks head west for Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash with Brentford knowing that they are just two games away from Wembley.

Charlton will be looking to bounce back after defeat at the weekend. However, they will have to overcome the Bees, who are the League One's form team.

Charlton missed out on a chance to go second in League One after a Brentford first half double was enough to see off the Addicks.

The Bees gave the away side the run around in the opening 45 minutes with Myles Weston - a former Addicks trainee - particularly effective on the left wing.

A patched up Charlton side won a point away to Brentford on Saturday as they increased their unbeaten run to nine games.

The match at Griffin Park saw another comeback for the depleted Addicks, but not on the scale of the last-gasp draw with Swindon two days before.
