The DLR has been in a state of constant expansion since its inception in 1982 when the emerging Docklands developments demanded a dedicated transport link.

The original layout of the network saw routes from Island Gardens via Poplar to Stratford and, to the West, to Tower Gateway.

A signal failure at Canada Water saw the Jubilee line suspended between London Bridge and Canary Wharf at the peak of rush hour, while Bank station shut because of overcrowding.

Long-suffering rush-hour commuters on DLR's Bank to Lewisham line will have congestion eased thanks to the introduction of the first three-car trains.

The completion of extended platforms on that section of track means it will be the first to take advantage of 55 new carriages, which have been bought at a cost of £100million.

Canary Wharf Group sold its leasehold interest in the building for £208million this morning. The new owner is a limited partnership called 5 Churchill Place LP.

As late workers and midweek drinkers ambled to the DLR late last Wednesday, some spotted a slightly longer train pulling into the platform.

It may not have been in operation, but this was the first sighting of DLR's new three-car trains on the Bank to Lewisham line.

The new South Quay DLR station could be open in the next few weeks.

The Docklands Light Railway has been working on the new station approximately 120m east of the current stop for nearly two years in order to accommodate three-car trains.

DLR put "on hold" for person on track

DLR services stalled this morning after reports of a person on the track near Bank.

Trains were put "on hold" for nearly 15 minutes during the rush-hour, and a failed train later caused severe delays to the route in and out of the City.

Events began early on Wednesday outside Bank station, as thousands from around the country plan to make their voices heard.

The company has revealed the new timetable – and it’s a mixed bag for passengers who have complained of overcrowding on the Woolwich extension.

DLR fault to hit evening commute?

SIGNALLING problems could knock out key Docklands Light Railway lines until the evening rush hour.

The routes between Canary Wharf and Bank and Poplar to Canary Wharfwill be out while contractors try to fix a signalling problem at Westferry.

A spokesman for Transport for London said: "Contractors were installing new signalling equipment over the weekend, and they've found something which needs to be fixed. We would hope to have the problem resolved by the rush hour."

WEEKEND maintenance on the Docklands Light Railway has spilled into Monday morning, disrupting key lines on the network.

At a time of economic nervousness I have to boast that I only spent three days on the beach, with the rest of my break spent decorating the house and visiting potential universities with my teenage daughter – the looming expense of the latter explaining the relative frugality of the holiday.

I have returned to an orgy of warmth, making up for the cold weather, about the UK Olympic performance.
