Latest plans to redevelop Asda on the Isle of Dogs have been met with anger after it was revealed it would see the area's only petrol station demolished.

Conservative councillor Blackwall and Cubitt Town Gloria Thienel said the proposed development by Ashbourne Beech for the Crossharbour site would be to hit the Island's car owners hard.

A major retail and residential development is being planned for a central site of the Isle of Dogs.

Despite the credit crunch, local planning issues have dominated my council casework recently.

Plans are in for Wood Wharf and Asda and there has been consultation on the Crossrail station and a plan to replace the City Pride with a 63-storey tower, building the affordable housing 1.5miles away at the Island Point site.

On the waterways, plans are back to moor a ferry at West India Pier, and a floating hotel next to Meridian Place.

But Troy Landwehr, from Wisconsin in the US, can claim to be an expert in the field, with his creations including dairy-based versions of the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore.

He was in Docklands for his latest designs, to promote the launch of Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille on DVD.
Troy was carving ‘Remy the rat’ – the star of the film who dreams of becoming a gourmet chef in a famous Parisian restaurant – out of a 40lb block of cheddar cheese in front of customers at ASDA in East Ferry Road, Isle of Dogs.

The cheese-master, who has appeared on the David Letterman show, was also creating special cheddar mini hearts for shoppers to mark the event on Valentine’s Day.
