West Ham’s pre-season has been characterised by late goals and lucky escapes and the encounter with Premier League newcomers Norwich was no exception.
Harry Toffolo’s late own goal gave West Ham victory as they prepare for their Europa League challenge against Astra Giurgiu at Upton Park on Thursday, July 26.
The friendly with the East Anglians was held to mark 80 years of football at Carrow Road. The game in 1935 saw the Canaries win 4-3 but there was to be no such welter of goal-mouth action in 2015.
Again it was new signing Dimitri Payet who caught the eye in Slaven Bilic’s 11 and it was his cross that Toffolo deflected into his own net. It was a cruel (if meaningless) blow to a home side that had been creative only to see striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel too rusty to capitalise.
West Ham had almost scored inside 30 seconds when midfielder Morgan Amalfitano tried a speculative long shot which beat John Ruddy but hit the post. Later Matt Jarvis, released by Kevin Nolan, saw his shot blocked and the rebound sent over the bar.
WEST HAM: Adrian, Burke (Jenkinson 60), Tomkins, Henry (Ogbonna 60), Page (Cresswell 60), Poyet (Noble 60), Nolan (Kouyate 60), Amalfitano (Oxford 60), Maiga (Valencia 60), Jarvis (Zarate 60), Sakho (Payet 60)
