Former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp has backed Joey Barton to be a hit at Upton Park.

The former Newcastle and Manchester City midfielder has been a free agent since May, with reports emerging recently that Barton was on the verge of signing for West Ham .

And Barton’s former manager at QPR Harry Redknapp told radio station TalkSport that he could become a fans’ favourite at the Boleyn.

He said: “I had a couple of managers ring me last week from good Championship clubs and I said to them ‘I’d take him’.

“He’s got strong opinions about the game and doesn’t hold back with them.

“But he’s a good player and a good trainer. He gets people at it, he wants to win.

“If they take him for a year I think he’ll be alright. He wants to win for his life, I think he’ll do OK at West Ham .”
