West Ham’s first game of the season saw them comfortably beat Andorran outfit FC Lusitans 3-0 in the Europa League first qualifying round at Upton Park.

With less than five minutes gone the fans were purring inside the Boleyn ground as winger Matt Jarvis’ delightful cross found Diafra Sakho for his opener.

In the early stages the Hammers had clearly left Sam Allardyce’s playing style behind.

The hosts were patient in possession with no sign of any long balls.

Teenage prodigy Reece Oxford went close with a powerful header, but Lusitans keeper Gerardo Rubio claimed the ball comfortably in the end.

Jarvis was tormenting opposing right back Carlos Crespo, with the former England international's delivery to Frenchman Morgan Amalfitano resulting in the midfielder lashing his drive into the side netting.

With just over half an hour played, many in the stands were left wondering why Sakho had not managed a hat-trick.

But some patient and solid build-up play involving Diego Poyet, son of former Sunderland boss Gus, and Amalfitano resulted in the Senegal striker heading over from six yards.

Reece Burke went close as well with a header cleared off the line by Lutisans' Crespo, as Terry Westley’s side kept adding to the pressure.

After 40 minutes, Sakho finally got his goal. Some tricky play from Mauro Zarate, beating three Lusitans players, resulted in an exquisite cross to Sakho who stretched to nod the ball home.

On the half time whistle, Sakho doubled his tally and doubled the Hammers lead. An exchange of passes between Amalfitano and Zarate saw Sakho slotting home to score his 14th goal in 27 games.

Four minutes into the second half, and Sakho was at the centre of the action again. His sublime flick saw Amalfitano clean through on goal, but put his effort straight at Rubio’s legs.

Rubio was left red-faced seconds later. His poor clearance fell to Amalfitano, who tried his luck from 40 yards, but the goalkeeper managed to recover by tipping the ball over the bar.

After 57 minutes, Jarvis’s cross found captain James Tomkins in acres of space and he was able to nod home.

With six minutes of added time another Cullen shot was only a lick of paint off the crossbar from rattling the net in a superb effort from the Republic of Ireland international.
