In the wake of West Ham’s superb start to the 2015/16 campaign, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic says a top six finish “is possible”.
The east Londoners have won six of their first 10 league games and are currently on a seven game unbeaten streak ahead of Saturday’s clash against newly promoted Watford.
Keeping up the momentum and hoping for some luck is the way to join the elite, according to Bilic.
Bilic said: “In every season you have surprises, especially in the cup. But to do it in the league is very difficult. Every season you have one surprise. You have them everywhere. Celta Vigo are doing just that in Spain.
“We have to keep this up for the whole season. It is very rarely seen but it is possible. All of the clubs that are outside of the top six should hope or dream about it – otherwise what is the point in playing.”
This time last season saw the East Londoners occupy fourth spot was under the stewardship of Sam Allardyce. Because of the quality of the opposition and the strength of play, Bilic has improved and progressed on that shortlived festive burst.
“We are not thinking that way this time – that we were fourth at Christmas last year,” said the former Besiktas coach.
“There is no point in looking that far ahead – we are not planning long term this season. Of course we look to the future but we are not doing that in terms of counting the points. We are planning the training sessions in the future for fitness reasons but we are approaching the games individually.”
Bilic knows exactly why the Hammers tumbled from fourth to 13th position in the space of five months.
The former Croatia national team boss said: “It’s very simple – in the first half of the season in some games we were a little bit lucky. We were winning deservedly but then opponents would hit the post several times.
“The second half of the season we were unlucky in some games. The game against Manchester United at home was a game where we deserved to get three points. After that the motivation was lost because you know you can’t catch the teams above you or the teams below couldn’t catch you.”
