Tom Daley has taken gold on the final day of diving at the LEN European Aquatics Championships in Stratford.
The 21-year-old sportsman won his third European 10m Platform title in front of a 1,700-strong crowd at the London Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park.
He scored 570.40 to win his third medal of the Championships on Sunday, May 15 and said it was the perfect boost ahead of Rio 2016 .
“It was lovely to come in and get the gold medal. But it wasn’t really about that for me, “ The Olympic bronze medallist. “It was about being in the right place at the right time and now I’m in the perfect position going into the Olympic Games.”
He also won the European 10m title in the 2008 and 2012 but didn’t have an easy ride in this year’s final, as Russia’s 2014 champion Viktor Minibaev recorded two dives in the 90s, setting a score of 524.60 for Daley to beat in the last round.
But the British star stepped up to the challenge scoring between 96.20 and 99.00 for five of his six dives to add the 10m title to his Mixed 3m Synchro gold and 10m Synchro silver from earlier in the week.
Tom said: “Viktor Minibaev has been a tough competitor of mine all year at the World Series and we always have that rivalry but I’m glad I came out on top today.
“I’ve been training well and I just wanted to be able to come in and dive at my best. I’m looking forward to Rio now. It’s an outdoor pool and anything could happen.”
The British success continued to the last event of the session, with Commonwealth champions Rebecca Gallantree and Alicia Blagg scoring 319.32 to win silver in the 3m Synchro, leaving the Brits on top of the diving medal table with 11 medals from 13 events.
The European Aquatics Championships, the biggest event held at the London Aquatics Centre since the 2012 Games, continues until Sunday, May 22 with the swimming heats and finals.
