West Ham should be going into Saturday's match against Sunderland full of hope, with the Black Cats in disarray.

But the worry must be the defence, which has been shipping in goals – three to Arsenal, three to Crystal Palace, two to Spurs – in recent games. And the trend is the wrong way with the Irons at the bottom end of a table showing the most improved defences.

West Brom and Hull have the joint most improved defences in the Premier League at the moment.

Both the Baggies and the Tigers have conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game in their last six league matches.

That's 0.8 per game fewer than the 1.5 per game they were conceding in the previous six games.

The next best defensive improvement belongs to Manchester City who have gone from conceding 1.5 per game to 0.8 per game.

Tottenham's defence has suffered the biggest deterioration though.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have conceded an average of 2.0 goals per game in their last six matches, 0.8 per game more than the 1.2 they conceded in the previous six matches.

Liverpool have the tightest defence in the premier League at the moment. Brendan Rodgers' side have conceded an average of just 0.5 goals per game in their last six league matches.

Leicester, QPR, Sunderland and West Ham have all conceded an average of 1.7 per game in the last six matches.

In the Championship, the defences of Charlton and Millwall reflect their fortunes with the Addicks mid-table and the Lions rock bottom.
