The sand was flying in the July heat as bars from across London came to Canary Wharf for an afternoon of sun, sport and drink at the Action For Kids beach volleyball championships.

Around 50 employees from establishments in the capital competed in the tournament as the sun scorched Montgomery Square .

The aim of the afternoon on Tuesday, July 19 was to help raise money and awareness for the Action For Kids charity, which helps to empower young disabled people by providing employment and training opportunities.

The beach volleyball courts are in place until the end of July

Action For Kids fundraising director Tracey Lloyd said: “The bartenders have basically come down to have a bit of a summer party, playing some volleyball and meeting up with some fellow bartenders.

“It’s a really lovely atmosphere, everyone seems to know each other but they all really want to win and they’re getting a bit competitive.

“It’s such a lovely venue here and it’s just good for everyone in Canary Wharf to not work all the time so they can come and have a bit of fun.”

Two teams were from Loves Company in Shoreditch and general manager Russell Burgess was enjoying the weather and the competitive spirit.

“It’s a beautiful day out in Canary Wharf,” he said. “It’s not something you expect. We have beach music blaring and everyone is jumping around having a good time and it’s all for an amazing cause as well.

“It’s a beautiful thing and the fact that we can do it and highlight this charity in a place where there is a lot of money is great.

Nick Rodgers, managing director of sponsor Identity Drinks Brands, said such events helped to encourage bartenders to be more health-conscious.

He said: “It just gets people down to play some sport and to enjoy themselves. The sun today has been amazing.”
