A nasty gash to the eyelid has forced East Ender Elliott Matthews to withdraw from the biggest fight of his life.

The boxer was due to face Nick Blackwell in the clash for the British Middleweight Championship in the ring at City Academy Bristol, on Saturday (November 14).

Yet a bloody injury suffered during a sparring session just one week before the bout has seen his dreams slashed.

Manager Mickey Helliet said: “We’re all totally gutted that Elliott suffered such a bad cut in his last spar.

“This was a massive opportunity for him and we were really looking forward to what would have been by far his biggest fight yet.

“Now we need to re-group and let the cut heal and work on creating a new opportunity for him.”

The 34-year-old previously told The Wharf of how he had upped his training regime at Limehouse Marina Elite’s professional boxing facilities and made the most of the top-quality ring and pads funded by OISG.

Currently undefeated in all professional bouts, he said he had steeled himself for a “hard fight”.

Elliott and his team are awaiting a rearranged date.

Mickey added this would depend on both Blackwell’s mandatory defence of the title as well as the healing time for the injury.
