It’s early in the season to start questioning where Charlton are capable of finishing.
But a win at heavily-fancied Derby County could silence the doubters.
The Addicks face probably their biggest test of the season travelling to Pride Park on Saturday, August 15, as the Rams have been installed as the pre-season favourites to win the Championship title.
But Charlton proved on the opening day they were no pushovers, winning 2-0 against other promotion hopefuls QPR, and the clash with Derby looks like it could be one of brains vs brawn.
The midlanders invested heavily in technically gifted players this summer, bringing in Tom Ince (£4.5million) and Andreas Weimann (£2.75million), as well as securing the huge coup of striker Darren Bent from Aston Villa.
Each are expected to play some part against Charlton as former Real Madrid coach Paul Clement will want a winning start to the side’s home campaign.
But Addicks boss Guy Luzon will have other ideas, as his new signings look to be have gelled straight away, and another win could propel them into the automatic promotion spots.
He told Charlton Athletic’s official website: “Derby are one of the best teams in the league, but we always have a lot of confidence and quality to get the three points.
“I know they are a club that have played in the Premier League but that is not important for us, we are focused on our players.
“I always have confidence for my players and my team and my expectation is to come away with three points.”
He is hopeful striker Tony Watt will be fit enough to feature on Saturday despite a slight knock picked up during the week.
“Tony felt his leg a bit, so he is a doubt,” Luzon said.
“Igor Vetokele is still not ready, but should be available in the next couple of weeks.
“Stephen Henderson is not ready also. He might be able to return following the international break next month.”
