Newham has been announced as the fifth most miserable place in the country – with Tower Hamlets and Greenwich hot on its heels.
Out of the 10 places in the UK where inhabitants were least content, nine were London boroughs, according to a happiness poll by Rightmove, which is based on a survey about residents’ satisfaction with their lives.
Bottom of the list was the borough of Barking and Dagenham, followed by Hounslow, Brent and Harrow.
The level of residents’ satisfaction was measured on various criteria including safety, neighbourliness and amenities, with the main issues in London being high rents and property prices in poorly developed areas.
The happiest place in the UK was found to be three-time winner, Harrogate in Yorkshire, while London’s crown went to Richmond upon Thames.
Rightmove’s housing expert Miles Shipside said: “To come top of our Happy at Home Index three years in a row is no mean feat, and we’ll be expecting a spike in people having a look on Rightmove to see what they might be able to afford to buy or rent in the Harrogate area.”
