Of the 2,600 high street estate agents in London, Tower Hamlets has 131 – and 14 of those are within 400m of Canary Wharf Tube.
Online estate agent HouseSimple has combined the Rightmove figures with its own research to calculate average earnings by agents in each London borough.
It claims in 2014, Tower Hamlets agents earned £49,578,205 in fees, while in Greenwich, which has 64 agents, the figure was £30,525,873 and in Newham, which has 74 agents, it was £17,600,037.
HouseSimple CEO Alex Gosling said: “London high streets are paved with property gold.
“While small independent retailers are being pushed out by rising rents, estate agents are securing the best spots on the high street and filling their pockets – last year to the tune of more than £1billion.
“In a buoyant property market, it’s easy for estate agents to set up shop and they can afford to pay the rent on less than four sales a month.
“It’s impossible to walk down a local high street in London now without passing an estate agent’s window, but Londoners may still be surprised to know just how many estate agents there are across the capital.”
HouseSimple’s calculations presume an average fee of £9,384.
