Victoria Park has been voted the most popular in the country for the second year running.

The green space at the heart of Tower Hamlets secured a “huge” number of public votes to retain the People’s Choice Award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Plus Partnership.

Last year, it welcomed more than 9million visitors and mayor John Biggs said it as “one of the most loved places in the whole country”.

The winner was announced on Wednesday, October 21, and a community celebration has been planned for Thursday, October 29, at The Hub Building.

Mayor Biggs said: “We’re so proud of this incredible park. Our staff lovingly look after it and make it such a stunning part of the borough.

“This award really should be seen as a huge round of applause to them.

“With the fireworks coming back to the Park on November 7, I encourage everyone to go down and enjoy the people’s park.”

The park attracts 275,000 festival-goers each year, including those who flocked to Lovebox and Citadel this year. It also hosts a year-round community programme.

A recent refurbishment involved creating a new community facility and cafe, as well as installing extra play equipment and restoring historic monuments.

Green Flag Award manger Paul Todd said: “Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets is a truly worthy winner of the 2015 People’s Choice awards.

“Congratulations to all of the staff and volunteers who go the extra mile to maintain the park’s high standards and make it such a wonderful place for people to visit.”

To celebrate the People’s Choice Award, the council is urging visitors to send in their favourite memories of the park.
