Raw meat was thrown onto a Jewish sculpture as vandals attacked a memorial in the heart of the East End.
A drinking fountain in Whitechapel - paid for by residents to honour Edward V11 in the 20th Century - was the target for the apparent anti-Semitic attack.
Bypassers discovered William Silver Frith’s sculpture covered in chicken and other animal products early on August 20.
Twitter user Lauren Justice posted images of the desecration on Twitter.
She told The Evening Standard : “I was just coming into Whitechapel for work this morning - usually I do not see the memorial because it is concealed by market stalls, but today it was just covered in meat.
“I just think it is disgusting. It is a memorial. I do not know if they think it is funny or what, but it cannot be allowed to stay up like that. I find it offensive.”
A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council said the incident had been reported to police.
Officers from the borough were sent to clean up the memorial.
