A Tower Hamlets police officer who injured six people in a high-speed chase has received a 15-month suspended jail term for dangerous driving.

Lee Drake, 52, went through red lights in Poplar High Street with no sirens sounding and hit a moped leaving the 27-year-old rider with life-threatening injuries.

Four passers-by were hit with debris while Drake and his colleague in the patrol car were also injured in the crash in June 2014. He had failed to follow procedure, said Metropolitan Police.

PC Drake admitted careless driving and was found guilty of two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday (February 11) where he received a 15-month jail term suspended for 18 months. He was also disqualified from driving for 30 months and fined £4,200.

Det Con Adam Whitehall said: ”[This] is a reminder of the expectations the public hold on police drivers. Pc Drake’s driving on that day fell far below the high standards expected by the Met and the public.”

Drake faces internal misconduct proceedings and is working on restricted duties in the meantime.
