Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith – both evoking a certain sort of white soul sensibility – took the honours at the Brits at The O2 in Greenwich last night.
They shared top prizes at the annual showcase of the British music industry.
But it was two ladies who stole the show. The most popular star in the world right now – Taylor Swift won International Solo Female and gave a blistering performance while Madonna tripped on a cape and fell on stage during her closing act – earning "oohs" from the crowd and plaudits for her recovery.
She failed to step free of the garment in her closing showcase and the 56-year-old went tumbling.
Earlier, Sheeran took prizes for British Solo Male and Best British Album while Sam Smith was the Breakthrough Act of the Year along with a Global Success award for International Sales.
There were awards too for Paloma Faith (British Solo Female) and Mark Ronson (Uptown Funk, Best British Single).
Crowdpleasers One Direction won British Artist Video of the Year.
