Travellers heading for Swiss destinations Basel and Bern can fly direct from London City Airport with SkyWork Airlines .

Operations began on Sunday, July 19 with the firm’s twin-engine turboprop Saab 2000 aircraft.

East Londoners can jet off at 7.20am, Monday to Friday, or at 5.20pm on Sundays.

An evening route providing additional flights at 6.10pm every weekday will launch on September 1.

All aircraft departs from the Docklands site for Basel and, after a brief stopover in the Swiss capital, heads on to Bern.

The airport’s chief commercial officer Matthew Hall said: “We are delighted to have Skywork Airlines on board to continue the tradition of a Swiss airline operating an LCY to Basel route.

“Switzerland is a very important market for us and we are very pleased to add Basel and Bern to Geneva and Zurich on our list of destinations.”

A statement from SkyWork Airlines said the routes had been added in response to demand from business travellers.

It said: “This new service is therefore in response to their requests and to SkyWork Airlines aspirations to offer seamless convenience.”
