Police are hunting a gang after an Isle of Dogs councillor was attacked for recording anti-social behaviour.

Andrew Wood was left with heavy bruising and a cut to his face following the incident last Thursday.

The Canary Wharf councillor said he had seen youths driving scooters at high speed and doing stunts by the Barkantine Quarterdeck near Westferry Road.

As he began to film the scooters for evidence, a group of around 15 youths aged 13-16 confronted him. As Mr Woods moved away, one of the group followed him and punched him in the face. Police were called but the attacker had left before they arrived.

Cllr Woods said: “The Isle of Dogs is a low crime area but we have problems with teenagers hanging out in public areas late into the night, drug taking in peoples stairwells and scooters being ridden dangerously by kids who are not thinking about the dangers they cause to other people or themselves.”

The Conservative councillor is advising anyone who sees the group to call police on the 101 number.

“They should not be approached and if they do approach you in a threatening manner ring 999 immediately,” he said.
