A man who stalked a drunken woman through the streets of the East End before seizing and raping her has been sent to jail.
Shohid Miah, 34, pleaded guilty to rape after initially telling police that the woman had propositioned him.
The waiter of Kings Arms Court, Whitechapel, E1, was sentenced to five years and four months imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
Det Con Denise Rutter said: “Miah stalked the victim through the streets of Whitechapel waiting for an opportunity to take advantage of her vulnerable condition.
“The victim in this case has been incredibly brave throughout this investigation and I hope that this conviction provides her with a measure of comfort and that the sentence handed down encourages other victims of sexual crime not to suffer in silence, but to come forward.”
The incident occurred on April 20 last year at 10.30pm and Miah’s predatory pursuit was caught on CCTV, the cameras tracing his cat and mouse game. He eventually approached her and led her into a secluded area on Old Montague Street, prompting CCTV monitoring staff to alert police.
Officers arrived at the scene within minutes and found Miah adjusting his lower clothing and the victim, a woman in her 20s, in distress on the floor.
Miah was arrested on suspicion of rape and when interviewed declined to answer questions providing a prepared statement that claimed the victim had propositioned him.
At an earlier hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Miah pleaded guilty to two counts of rape on the same woman.
