A robber who stabbed a woman on the Isle of Dogs causing lasting damage to her hand has been jailed for eight years.
Abdul Kalam, 41, of Westferry Road, attacked the victim from behind in the alleyway between Ironmongers Place and Spindrift Avenue.
He grabbed hold of her handbag and ordered her to give it to him. When the 26-year-old woman ignored him he pushed her to the ground and dragged her along the street.
He then took out a knife and stabbed her left wrist causing a deep laceration. He then picked-up the bag and ran off.
The London Ambulance Service took the woman to the Royal London Hospital with severe damage to the tendons and nerves in her hand. She has been discharged from hospital, but has not recovered full functionality in her hand.
Tower Hamlets police arrested Kalam on October 3, 2014 and charged him with robbery which happened at 1.45am on September 26, 2014.
On Monday, July 11 he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Abi Mallett said: “Kalam committed a cowardly and unprovoked attack which has had long term consequences for the victim.
“I would like to thank her for the courage she has displayed throughout this horrible assault, and the determination she showed in bringing this offender to justice. The lengthy sentence Kalam has received today is a just reflection of this.
“Violent robberies such as this are thankfully rare, but the public are undoubtedly safer now that this man is no longer walking the streets.”
