Traffic was halted and Wharfers looked on in shock as a man died in the road after falling from the bridge leading to Poplar DLR station during the rush hour on Wednesday (September 18).
Although the bridge, over the A1261 Aspen Way is covered, there is a small gap between the bridge and the lift shaft. This is where he fell from, said witnesses at the scene.
Traffic heading west into the Limehouse Link was stopped as passers-by tried to assist the man. Paramedics quickly arrived but it was plain the man was in a perilous condition.
Traffic heading east was also held up as a motorist parked to provide assistance. The westbound A1261 was closed for about an hour but had wider knock-on effects.
Detectives have launched an investigation but said they were treating his death as “non-suspicious”.
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “Police were called to Aspen Way at 6.30pm on September 17 to reports of a man fallen from a bridge.
“Officers and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Inquiries continue.”
