A simple box of shiny Lego sparked creativity among youngsters at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre .

Children dug deep and chose plastic bricks to create a three metre-long ship – inspired by the area’s maritime history – which will be on show throughout August.

They were helped on their mission by Lego brick build experts on Wednesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 30 while crowds of shoppers watched.

A competition to find the best name for the vessel – with a chance to scoop a Lego prize – runs until August 16 and can be entered on a visit to the shopping centre or via the dedicated Facebook page .
