The eco-friendly Sainsbury's in Greenwich Peninsula is set to close.

The supermarket - which has won awards for its sustainable design - will cease trading at 6pm on Tuesday, June 23.

The brand will open a new store at 9am the following day at Charlton Riverside.

Ikea now hopes to claim the Bugsby’s Way site for its first store in south east London.

The homeware firm already has outline planning permission for the site although faces strong opposition from community campaigners No Ikea Greenwich.

NIG believes the “disastrous planning application” would cause chaos for the town’s transport infrastructure.
