Peers want to end the anomaly of Stratford International station – by bringing a direct link to the continent into the heart of east London.

The station, opened in 2009, sees one or two international services per hour running in each direction – but none of them stop.

While the Government says it is a “commercial matter” for Eurostar, leading peers are pushing for more action to force a re-think.

In a House of Lords’ debate on the regeneration of east London, peers asked the Department of Transport to lobby Eurostar to reconsider its decision to focus its services on St Pancras, especially in light of the arrival of Crossrail to Stratford.

Former EastEnders actor Lord Cashman of Limehouse said: “It is lamentable that the huge financial investment in Stratford International station has not paid off.

“I know that we cannot force international operators to use the facilities, but we can have imagination and flair in promoting them to international operators, as well as work with national carriers to exploit the economic opportunities.”

Lord Moynihan, former director of the London Organising Committee of the 2012 Games said a link would be a “catalyst for further business growth”.

He said: “As I understand it, the Government have little room for manoeuvre on Eurostar but the line between London and the Channel Tunnel is under a concession from the Government and is incentivised to increase traffic.

“That is the area where the Government can bring their influence most to bear.”

Baroness Doocey said £1billion had been invested in the station. “That is a staggering figure and still we have no international train services coming in or out of the station.”

Minister in the business department Baroness Neville-Rolfe agreed to pass on to the Department of Transport “the strength of feeling on this issue and on the opportunities once Crossrail arrives at Stratford”.

However, Eurostar told The Wharf: “Our decision not to stop at Stratford International remains unchanged.

“Our journey times are a significant factor against present or any future competition, and we have to consider very carefully anything which would increase them.

“Beyond this, there are a number of additional costs to set up facilities for stopping international trains in any station, which at present aren’t commercially justifiable.

“The link provided by South Eastern High-Speed between St Pancras International and Stratford International stations takes just seven minutes, allowing customers to connect to our service very easily and conveniently.”
