East London is the capital of uninsured drivers in England.

There are 13,965 drivers who have endorsements on their licence for driving without third-party insurance in the E postcode area.

The latest figures show there are just under 696,000 registered drivers to the E postcode, which means one driver in 50 doesn’t have proper insurance.

This is the highest ratio of uninsured drivers anywhere in the country, according to figures released exclusively to The Wharf.

Two other east London postcodes – the IG postcode in Ilford and the SE postcode in south east London – were also in the top five nationally.

Two of these drivers caught without adequate cover in and around east London were as young as 13.

A total of 42 underage drivers – aged 16 or under – have been caught driving without insurance in the E postcode.

If they don’t have provisional licences, the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) sets up a record for these teenagers as if they did.

In the Ilford postcode there are 4,654 uninsured drivers, or one in every 57 drivers in the area.

The real totals are likely to be higher because these figures are only for the drivers who have their licenses endorsed with the code for “using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks”.

Third party insurance is the minimum level you need to drive legally in Britain.

Depending on your own level of cover, if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver you could face having to pay for the costs of repairing your car even if it wasn’t your fault.

However, don’t panic if you are hit by another car in Exeter.

The city in Devon has the lowest ratio of uninsured drivers in England.
