East Londoners could get a taste of the celeb-baiting Chiltern Firehouse vibe right on their doorstep – if they’re prepared to invest more than their time.

Michelin starred chef Nuno Mendes is looking to raise £1.75million in a crowdfunding venture, offering a third of a stake in a Wapping eatery via Seedr.

Portuguese chef Mendes aims to open Viajante in Metropolitan Wharf late next year. Diners can arrive by boat at the outdoor terrace in the 65-cover restaurant.

Mendes will stay on as executive chef at the Chiltern Firehouse but will aim to make his east London outpost a worldwide destination. It is not his first foray into east London as the original Viajante was in Bethnal Green where he won his first Michelin star in 2011 and earlier this year opened Taberna do Mercado near Brick Lane.

Mendes told Bloomberg : “We could have done it with major financial backers but I want to do it in a democratic way,” says Mendes, who opened a Portuguese venue, Taberna do Mercado, earlier this year. “I love the idea that anyone who has been to Viajante or liked Taberna or the Firehouse has the chance to participate.”
