Fundraisers, youth workers and cultural campaigners have been named Community Champions by Canary Wharf Group .

The company hosted its second awards ceremony at Level 39 to mark the achievements of nine east Londoners who tirelessly volunteer at projects across the area.

Winners included Lorraine Cavanagh OBE following 31 years of working for the Dockland Settlements while Elaine Sadler’s 12 years supporting the Globe Town Community Association was also flagged up.

Meanwhile Golam Mostafa, founder and president of the Bangladeshi group Udichi Shilpi Goshti UK and Bopishaki Mela celebration in Brick Lane won recognition for his impact on Tower Hamlets.

Head of community affairs at Canary Wharf Group Zakir Khan said: “As we embark on our residential development pipeline here at Canary Wharf , it is more important than ever to celebrate the residents in our existing local communities who contribute so much to those around them.

“Our Community Champions ceremony provides the opportunity to highlight and acknowledge the contribution of these individuals and show our appreciation.”

Each winner enjoyed a three-course dinner on Monday, October 26, before being presented with a framed certificate signed by Canary Wharf Group chairman, Sir George Iacobescu and a £250 cheque to donate to a community project.
