The Blackwall Tunnel will be closed until at least 5pm after a major fuel spill.
The northbound tunnel, which connects Greenwich to Canary Wharf beneath the River Thames, was closed just after 7am to recover a broken down motorbike. Contractors then found a diesel spill covering three quarters of the road that needed to be cleaned up.
Workers have spent hours mopping it up and Transport for London said the road will be closed “for the rest of the day” while it is resurfaced.
The accident has already caused misery for hundreds of motorists after creating 10-mile tailbacks.
Traffic is being diverted via Shooters Hill Road with congestion on the A2 towards Glenesk Road, southbound towards Kidbrooke Junction and in Woolwich, Charlton, Blackheath, Eltham and Greenwich.
Drivers are advised to expect long delays or use other routes.
Buses in south-east London have also been affected with delays of up to three hours according to TfL.
Woolwich ferry has extended its service until 11pm tonight.
