A three-month-old baby died on Tuesday (July 5) the same day his parents from Poplar appeared in court accused of assaulting him.
Doctors alerted police after little Rifat Mohammed was admitted to hospital on Monday suffering from critical injuries. Later he was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in central London where he died late in the afternoon.
Rifat’s parents, Mohammed Miah and Rebeka Nazmin, of St Leonard’s Road, both appeared in custody at Thames Magistrates’ Court earlier that day.
Miah, 36, and Nazmin, 31, were both charged with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and two counts of child cruelty and were remanded to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on August 2.
Detectives from the Met are in talks with the Crown Prosecution Service about bringing further charges following Rifat’s death.
