Trinity Mirror, owner and publisher of the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror, has confirmed that it is in talks with Richard Desmond over the possible purchase of some of his media assets.

The media company, owner of The Wharf, said it was in the early stages of exploration with Mr Desmond’s Northern & Shell which holds the Express stable of newspapers, including the Daily Express, Daily Star and OK! magazine.

Trinity Mirror, based at One Canada Square, issued a statement to the Stock Market this morning following a report in The Times.

It says: “The Board of Trinity Mirror Plc notes the recent media speculation and confirms that it is at an early stage of evaluating certain of Northern & Shell’s assets.

“There is no certainty that any agreement will be reached in respect of the range of outcomes currently under consideration. A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate.”

Northern & Shell has a property in the Isle of Dogs as well as Lower Thames Street in EC3.

Trinity Mirror shares rose 2% on the announcement.
