A "pop-down" event, where entrepreneurs can get backing for a local project just by purchasing a £5 meal, will be held in Poplar tonight.

The Poplar Pot, inspired by global micro-funding movement Sunday Soup, brings a new approach to the funding of local projects.

Anyone that comes along will purchase a £5 meal and have the chance to pitch their project to the crowd to gather support for their work.

At the end diners will cast their votes, and the winning project will take home the money from ticket sales. The other projects will receive a package of services designed to develop their venture.

Cllr Khales Uddin Ahmed said: "The Poplar Pot is a groundbreaking initiative. This is the first time Poplar has ever come together in this way to celebrate the richness in the community and support the grassroots projects that make it such a dynamic place to live and work."
