September is National Mushroom Month – so what better way to celebrate the hidden magic of the ingredient than by slathering some shiitake serum on your face?

The Re:SPA salon, at Reebok Sports Club, has a handful of products packed with the beauty-boosting benefits of the fungi available to buy.

All made by Dr Murad, for his eponymous brand, they include the Invisiblur Perfecting Shield SPF30 (£55 for 30ml), Intensive Age Diffusing serum (£65 for 30ml) made with shiitake and the AHA Rejuvenating Handcream, (£24 for 75ml) which contains silver ear mushroom.

Therapists at the Canada Square spa also offer a 50-minute Resurgence Renewal Facial (£84) which makes use of Murad’s products.

But just what is the magic in the mushroom?

Re:SPA manager Adele Rowley said it was all down to hyaluronic acid which re-fills the skin’s water cells. This, in turn, plumps up and smooth the skin to give a more youthful appearance.

She said: “When I first started training as a therapist you learn about the benefits of mushrooms. But back then people would have said something like ‘why would I want mushroom on my skin?’ Now it has come back with a vengeance.”

“Clients want natural products – no artificial flavours and colourings – and they realise natural things do work and it’s not all a gimmick.”

Adele said: “As you get older your skin loses collagen and you get sunken skin – this plumps it up.”

2. Rejuvenating AHA Hand Cream

“The mushroom is going to hydrate the skin cells and I also find it works well for those with eczema. It’s very versatile. One client even uses it on the psoriasis on her scalp.”

3. Invisiblur Perfecting Shield SPF30

Adele said: “It acts as a filler and primer, you can mix it 50/50 with your foundation, and it blurs away any imperfections. Over the course of time it might mean you don’t worry about make up either.”
