America is the most popular destination for Brits looking for a winter getaway.

Exclusive analysis of airport data for The Wharf shows there were 2.2million passenger journeys between British airports and the USA in January and February this year.

Spain was in second place, with 1.9million followed by Germany (1.7million), Ireland (1.6million) and Italy (1.4million).

France, Holland, Switzerland, the Canary Islands and the United Arab Emirates completed the top 10.

The data suggests the idea of getting away in winter is getting more and more popular.

Overall, the number of passengers taking an international flight in January or February rose by 6.8% in 2015 compared to the same months in 2014.

Among the places rocketing in popularity were Poland (up 14.3 per cent), Portugal (up 13.3 per cent), Italy (up 11.3 per cent) and Austria (up 10.1 per cent).

Scandinavia appears to be out of fashion, though – with the number of winter journeys to Norway and Sweden both down in 2015 compared to 2014.
