“What do you wear axe throwing?” I asked as we sped through the lush English countryside.

“What?” came the somewhat bewildered grunt from my other half.

“Axe throwing,” I persisted, “Is there an outfit?”

“That’s literally not a thing.”

This was how our journey to the little village of Westfield in East Sussex began.

My other half and I had joined forces with old friends (our "couples friends") and booked two nights in one of the luxury lodges at Woodlands Park Dream Lodge site.

Hot Tub at the Dream Lodge site

Our gaff featured a hot tub, picturesque views and quite a few older neighbours.

Driving in, it became apparent we (mostly in our 20s) were the youngest group on site by some margin – but that was great.

As long as you’re not a noisy, selfish moron and want somewhere that allows a decent BBQ and a few drinks, chilling out in a hot tub, long walks and pub lunches, it should work for you too.

For us, this was the perfect place for a long weekend away with mates. No hustle, no bustle, no London.

The historic town of Battle and seaside town of Hastings are nearby too and there are a surprising amount of activities available like fishing, golf, kayaking, target practice and beach walks.

Here are some highlights to explore..

Axe throwing, live rifle shooting and crossbow

It is pretty rare to be able to shoot a gun, throw an axe or shoot a crossbow, so I would highly recommend 1066 Target Sports.

Try one of the packages as it’s the best way to get a variety of activities under your belt and offers plenty of healthy competition.

Choose from one activity for £7.50 or a package of five activities for £27.50

The centre is five minutes drive from Woodlands Park.

Kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing

You can jump in the water for either paddle boarding, kayaking or canoeing with Sussex Adventure Activities year-round. Nearby Hastings Beach is the closest spot to Woodlands Park.

Prices for an hour of kayaking or paddle boarding start at £17.50, but courses and lessons are also available.

About 30 minutes drive from Woodlands Park.

Prawn, crayfish and avocado salad at The New Inn, Westfield, east Sussex (£5)

Eat and drink

Near to Woodlands Park is the Wild Mushroom and The New Inn .

The former is a little more fancy, while the latter offers a decent place for a few pints and good pub grub. I thoroughly recommend the prawn, crayfish and avocado salad (£5).

These are between a five and 20 minute walk from Woodlands Park.
