Jillian Michaels has been dubbed “America’s toughest trainer”. We caught up with the top health, wellness and fitness guru after she’d finished her first UK tour, Maximise Your Life, with a show at the Indigo2.
■ What was the tour all about?
It’s an interactive live show where I take the audience on a journey of self exploration.
I identify the ways and the reasons they hold themselves back. Then I give them tools to harness their potential.
■ Are people eager to share their stories?
Yes, always. People just want to feel heard and validated. They want to know you see them and that you care.
■ What was the most common fitness goal or worry – and how does this compare to US audiences?
They are similar. Very few questions were about fitness. The majority were about motivation and the rest were primarily diet related questions.
While we all have different things that drive us to certain conclusions – very often those conclusions are the same.
People allow themselves to be controlled by dysfunctional family dynamics, societal pressures, and cultural norms in ways that damage their feelings of self worth. We all want the same things on a general scale and it’s the same things that keep us from them.
■ What’s your fitness goal for 2015?
I’d love to be able to do a back flip. I’m not there yet, but I’m working on it.
