Bobbie's date with a prince

By Emma Midgley on July 5, 2007 12:00 AM

A TEENAGER with lung and heart problems had a sneak preview of the Diana memorial concert when she met Princes Harry and William at Wembley.
Until last year Bobbie-Leigh McNally, from Byng Street in the Isle of Dogs, was a healthy teenager who enjoyed swimming and playing goalie at George Green's School.
But when she turned 13, everything changed. She began to suffer from intestinal lung disease, a rare condition which causes breathing difficulties and heart and lung problems.

A PASSIONATE "green" campaigner who is very proud of what she has achieved at a Canary Wharf company has been recognised by a business magazine.
Charlotte Simmonds has been named one of the top 35 women in UK business under the age of 35 by Management Today.
The environment manager at Tube Lines, in Westferry Circus, has been with the company since 2004.

THE CANARY Wharf NHS walk-in centre has been given the all-clear by the medical body asked to investigate it.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) was urged to look at the Marsh Wall clinic last year, after GP Anila Reddy resigned from the centre in August.
Dr Reddy alleged at the time he left the centre that nurses were expected to carry out work for which they were unqualified, putting patients at risk.

City to extend its air reach

By Emma Midgley on June 28, 2007 12:00 AM

LONDON City Airport has moved a step closer to flying to far-flung destinations such as Eastern Europe.
This week the EU cleared the A318 to undertake steep approaches similar to those used when landing at the Royal Docks site.
The aircraft can carry 100 passengers and fly longer distances than planes that currently serve City Airport, such as the Avro RJ100.

Is recycling all mixed up?

By Emma Midgley on June 20, 2007 12:00 AM

A COUNCIL'S insistence on using mixed bags for recycling makes reusing glass a much more difficult task, according to an industry spokesman.
Tower Hamlets, which covers the Wharf and Isle of Dogs, has one of the worst recycling records in the country. Only 7.35 per cent of its waste is recycled.
And it uses mixed bags which means glass, paper and plastics are collected together before being taken to a local material recycling facility (MRF) where the various materials are sorted.

Fund finds that it has great appeal

By Emma Midgley on June 20, 2007 12:00 AM

WHARFERS have rallied round a secretary's bid to raise #200,000 so that her young cousin can travel to the US for lifesaving cancer treatment.
The Wharf's front-page story on May 17 about Louise Burrows' efforts to help George Yeomans, nine, prompted an anonymous donor to come up with #2,000 for her appeal.
And, after reading it, part-time DJ Dave Taylor, who works for Chevron in Westferry Circus, has helped to organise a fundraising party at the Britannia Hotel in Marsh Wall on August 9.

Anti-arms protest stepped up

By Emma Midgley on June 7, 2007 12:00 AM

PROTESTERS against the arms fair at ExCeL are stepping up their activities and planning how they will disrupt the event in September.
Squatters evicted on May 25 from the St Matthias Centre in Poplar were organising protests against the event, hosted by Defence Systems and Equipment International (DSEi), which is billed as "the world's largest fully integrated international defence exhibition".
The illegal occupiers, who belonged to a group called Disarm DSEi, will try to move on to properties nearby to continue their efforts, according to Tower Hamlets police intelligence.

ISLE of Dogs residents are fuming over planning proposals they say will increase the height of buildings, cram affordable housing into high-density flats and get rid of their parking spaces.
At a meeting of the Association of Island Communities (AIC), residents complained about a plan to build a 22-storey block of flats at 45 Millharbour.
The development will create a row of shops with 219 residential units above.

Green champions

By Emma Midgley on June 7, 2007 12:00 AM

BROADCASTER and naturalist Sir David Attenborough paid a visit to HSBC to announce its £500million programme to combat climate change.
The bank's money will go towards creating 'climate champions' worldwide, who will undertake field research and bring valuable knowledge and experience to their communities.
More than 25,000 HSBC staff will be able to volunteer to take part in 20 climate change projects around the world.

A LIMEHOUSE woman who reached the North Pole ended up confronting her worst fears when she was attacked by a polar bear.
Fortunately, the animal fled when members of her group fired a gun into the air and let off flares.
But that wasn't the hardest part of the 2007 Polar Challenge for 41-year-old Gabrielle Finn, who returned to her home in Branch Road on Thursday (May 24).
