Stratford has benefited from £9billion of investment since the Olympic Games was announced in 2005, according to a report released on Friday.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research said the figure shows a massive shift in perception for the east London area.

It is something of a mixed blessing when a shopping centre is closed down due to fears of overcrowding. That was the fate of Westfield Stratford City, sentinel of the Olympic Park through which the visitors trudged for their daily fix of action.

But the occasional shutdowns barely dented the shopping centre as it recouped its rewards for being, as director John Burton said, the legacy of the Games that was there beforehand.


The East End has always exhibited an ability to adapt - but the pace and scale of change with the arrival of the Olympic Games has placed a strain on the social fabric.

That is the view of author Barbara Nadel who has been living in Manchester, away from her native Newham, giving her an opportunity to watch the latest wave of regeneration from afar.


Another two men have been charged in relation to the killing of a 24-year-old at Westfield Stratford City last month.

Travis Odean Townsend, 20, of Walthamstow, is due to appear at Thames Magistrates Court on Monday facing a charge of violent disorder from the incident on June 29.
