Mention Chinatown to most Londoners and the likelihood of them conjuring up images of the lanterns of Gerrard Street is high.


Labour councillors are calling for an investigation amid claims an attempted break-in took place at their party offices at Tower Hamlets Town Hall.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on the weekend of March 9 and 10 - days before the Council Budget meeting - and the group is calling on the council to ensure the area is secure.


The executive mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman has unveiled plans to build a new town hall "making council services and elected members more accessible to the community".

The current council complex in Mulberry Place, near East India Dock DLR costs millions of pounds a year to lease, says Cabinet member for resources Cllr Alibor Choudhury.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman has moved out of the space previously occupied by the leader of the council into new quarters at an estimated cost of £120,000.


The independent mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, has secured agreement on his first budget.

At a second meeting on Tuesday night, the mayor accepted some of the changes offered by his former Labour colleagues in order to secure an agreement.
