A construction group behind plans to build a 54 storey development on the doorstep of Canary Wharf is threatening to scrap its proposal.

Turkish firm Agaoglu Group is reported to be considering the future of the scheme due to pressure from the Greater London Authority for it to reduce the size of the tower.

Canary Wharf Group has bought a former office block near the Limehouse Cut which already has permission for an 11-storey residential building.

Property firm Telereal Trillium sold the structure, a '30s employment exchange formerly owned by the Department for Work and Pensions, for an undisclosed fee.

Organisations including Greenwich Conservation Group and Greenwich Foundation have criticised alterations to the 2005 plans, calling them "intrusive" and "a disappointing solution."

Top of the tower for Metlife

Bloomberg News claims 250 employees will be moving into the 235m sq space on the 50th floor of the Canary Wharf landmark in July.

HSBC may buy back tower

BANKING giant HSBC is in talks to buy back its Canary Wharf headquarters according to a report in the Financial Times.

Spain's property firm Metrovacesa, which bought the tower for £1.1billion last summer, has until November to refinance an £810million loan from HSBC, which it used to purchase the building.

It is believed a sale is now the most likely outcome.
