A man who used a blowtorch to steal cash from ticket machines on the Docklands Light Railway has been sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Tomas Kemeklis, 28, of South Esk Road in Newham, struck in the early hours across a host of DLR stations, causing over £16,000 worth of damage.

A Newham police detective stole money, including from a prisoner at a station, to pay off debts.

DC Timothy Hemmings, 43, pleaded guilty to four charges of theft dating back to June. As well as taking cash from a prisoner he also stole from petty cash at a Newham police station.

Officers worked quickly to arrest a Greenwich man just 10 minutes after he stole a mobile phone and Oyster card from a passenger on the Tube.

Adrian Moldovan of Greenwich High Road was sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment at Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 31, after he admitted the theft.

Signed pictures of jockeys Lester Piggott and AP McCoy as well as former commentator Sir Peter O'Sullevan, worth more than £1,000 were shoplifted from Frontispiece in Canada Place Mall between 5pm and 7pm.
