Not only did HMS Lancaster have its appointment with the Queen cancelled it also took a hit on its way in to Canary Wharf.


The Queen returned to City Airport this week, 25 years after opening the same terminal building.

She and the Duke of Edinburgh unveiled a plaque at the site to mark the anniversary on Saturday as part of a tour of east London.

johnbiggs142WEBBY.jpgI am what I call a "respectful republican". I cannot see any moral or political basis for having a monarchy, but I am not about to start a revolution, and I respect the work of the royals, given that we have them. It doesn't interest me much beyond that.

But something strange happened - I fleetingly observed the royal pageant, and saw a lot of the wall-to-wall media coverage of it, and I felt a shimmer of warmth through those, generally resistant, bones.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee is upon us, and I'm delighted to say that the event is going to be celebrated in a traditional East End fashion, with plenty of street parties and bunting.

I am going to be attending as many as these events as I can, and am also looking forward to the grand river pageant that will pass through our borough.


The Queen returned to the scene of her first official engagement nearly 75 years to the day.

As an 11-year-old on April 27, 1937, she came with her parents King George VI and Elizabeth by boat from Westminster to the opening of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich as a birthday treat.
